“You can’t pour from an empty cup, take care of yourself first.”

As kids, we are taught to be kind to one another, treat each other with respect, have compassion for each other and of course the “golden” rule, “treat others as you would like to be treated.” Sadly, we are rarely taught to be kind and compassionate towards ourselves. We tend to perceive people who put themselves first as selfish, conceited or “full of themselves”. However, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. This week we caught up with MI OLA brand ambassador Amanda @amanda_strube and chatted about the importance of self-care and self-love. Check out her beautiful words of wisdom below!

The world seems to be going through a hard time right now. There are wars, terrorism, hate, racism, anxieties, stressors, mental illness, disease etc. and there needs to be a change. We need to re-learn compassion and what the golden rule really means and I personally think that begins with loving yourself. Loving yourself isn’t selfish and it isn’t conceited or rude. Self-care is meant to intentionally take care of our mental, physical and spiritual health and once we learn to take care of ourselves we can then learn to take care of others.
Self-care and self-love can be anything. mIt should be something to make you feel powerful, sexy, important, beautiful, empowered, badass, refreshed, vibrant… It is anything you do with the intention of being good to yourself. There are so many benefits for yourselves and others as you develop and practice self-love.

Self-love creates and cultivates self-acceptance and as you learn to accept yourself you can learn to accept others. It helps you become more productive and creative. It increases positive self-image and develops compassion for yourself, as well as others. It helps you become more confident, especially with decision making. It helps you destress and relax and can often help reduce symptoms of depression and feelings of anger or disappointment.
Self-love will look and feel different for everyone, but here are some examples to get you started and don’t forget to share your favorite form of self-care and self-love!
